Raymond Chandler’s La Jolla: ON SALE TILL AUG 20 (while seats are available): The tour will be led by local author Corey Lynn Fayman, whose Rolly Waters mysteries feature a guitar-playing private detective who lives in San Diego (www.coreylynnfayman.com). Fayman’s upcoming novel, The Esmeralda Goodbye, is a historical mystery set in 1950s La Jolla, featuring a cast that includes Raymond Chandler, J. Edgar Hoover, and Zsa Zsa Gabor.
A bus will pick the group up at the hotel and drive to La Jolla, where Raymond Chandler lived during his last years and wrote about as the town of Esmeralda, CA. The tour will view the outside of his original home and talk about his life with his wife at that location. From there it is a stop at the La Valencia hotel to view the building and bar that Chandler frequented. This will be followed by a short walking tour of downtown La Jolla including spots Chandler wrote about and visited. There will be free time for shopping or lunch (not included in tour price). After the return to the bus, you will learn of the old Del Charro hotel (now gone), where prominent politicians, Texas oilmen, gangsters, movie stars and Chandler himself sometimes stayed. The tour ends with a visit to Mt Hope Cemetery where Chandler and his wife Cissy are buried before returning you to the hotel.

USS Midway: Visit the Navy carrier that is now a museum. See the flight deck and tour the ship while also seeing multiple aircraft and equipment now stored there. Great for aviation or military buffs. Just .8 miles from the hotel, so it is a 15 minute walk along the shore or take a shared ride. Tour includes climbing ladders and stairs. Unfortunately some parts of tour are not available to those unable to walk unassisted.

Meet in front of the Midway entry point no later than 8:45am on Wednesday, August 30. Tour starts at 9am promptly. Special tour is one hour. Following the Docent-led tour, guests are free to stay onboard and continue with the guided audio tour narrated by Midway sailors to enhance your visit even further. Also, enjoy the “Voices of Midway” film detailing the events of the Battle of Midway! Tour includes full entry into the museum during the same day so you can spend more time looking at the Midway and the rest of the museum equipment. At this point tour becomes “self-guided” and ends at any point you wish. Transportation to and from hotel is not provided with this tour but the museum is within walking distance or you can take a rideshare service.
